Has Your School Banned Homemade Goodies?

The question is has your school banned homemade food snacks? Our school has a no homemade food policy. I actually like it and some hate it. They can arrange a in class food project.

Things to consider:
  • Let's face it not everyone kitchen is up to health standards: Cross contamination, e. coli, salmonella, lord forbid someones kitchen looks like those on hoarders.
  • Is the preparer of the food: licking the spoon, have a cold, washed their hands, just wiped a booger or their child's butt.
  • How fresh is those products: Just something in the freezer or cabinet for the last five to 10 years.
  • Food Allergies: Food allergies are everywhere now and packaged snack contain ingredient list. I even learn another mom daughter is allergic to red food dye.
Yes it is costly to buy for the whole class. That cost is way better than a child sick from food born illness or even dying. I feel much better for my son's safety.

Disclosure: Just sharing my opinion.

This is one of those issues I'm torn on. I agree that you never know the cleanliness of other peoples kitchen. As a former teacher I was always wary when certain kids gave me cookies at Christmas. On the other hand processed foods are gross. There are so many additives and dyes that students are far more likely to have an allergy from store bought foods.

Actually, you make some great points that I hadn't really thought of. For me, I dislike the rule at our school because I feel like (and know) most parent's will just buy processed junk to send for the kids snacks and/or treats. I'd rather have my child eat a homemade snack or treat from real food. That being said, even if they did allow it homemade food can be just as junk-filled depending on what it's made with.

I honestly hadn't really thought of the state of someone's kitchen or their hygiene practices. Maybe I'm kind of glad snacks are store-bought; or at least I can see more of a point now besides just the allergy factor. I'll guess I stand somewhere in the middle.

Our school just banned homemade goodies this year. I agree with the decision. We actually must tell parents a week before any parties the packaged items we are serving so that they have the opportunity to read the ingredients before the items are served. That gives them the ability to voice concerns about the menu or provide alternative food for their child. A young girl in a neighboring town died due to her food allergy at a school party last year. I personally would not want to take the chance and feel better with providing parents with the opportunity to read labels.

It used to bother me before but the more I think about it the more I'm happy for it

I took my son to a birthday at his friend's house. The kitchen was nasty with dirty dishes filling the sink and ALL the counters. The dirty dishes were piled all the way up to the upper cabinets. The fronts of the cabinets had dried crud splattered and smeared over the fronts. It was gross including the floors.

I would never have guessed that lady kept her house so gross.
