RECORD STORE DAY IS TOMORROW

RECORD STORE DAY IS TOMORROW!

This year the stores participating in Record Store Day are encouraging music fans to make it a family holiday and visit their local record store for the April 16th festivities with their kids. You can look up participating stores in your area here: http://www.recordstoreday.com/Venues

Record Store Day happens on the 3rd Saturday of April every year and it's a day where independent record stores across the country (and now world) sell exclusive music product, host in-store performances and events, and celebrate the spirit of music fans and the good ol fashioned way we all used to discover and learn about music before the internet took over.
Atlanta's Criminal Records Store proprietor (and Record Store Day co-founder), Eric Levin says "Criminal Records has always been a family destination, as a record store first and foremost, but also as a comic shop and toy store.  We learned many lessons from the yearly Free Comic Book Day as we launched our Record Store Day event. Inviting the entire family to come play was lesson number one."

This year especially highlights Record Store Day's status as a family holiday. For the first time in Record Store Day history, there will be an exclusive collectible vinyl figure designed by renowned artist Frank Kozik available at participating stores. Frank Kozik, widely touted for single-handedly bringing back the lost art of the concert poster and currently one of the most prolific and popular contemporary artists in the world, has created RPM, a specially designed 5" vinyl figurine. The packaging comes in a Blind Box style where the four unique figures are enclosed and hidden: The Anarchy Punk, The Super Hero, The Monster and The Let's Party Bear. The figures will be limited to only 5,000 pieces (1500 each of the Punk/Hero/Monster and 500 Let's Party).

Peter Holsapple of the seminal 70's power pop group The dB's, contends that Record Store Day is most definitely a family affair: "Record Store Day is actually one of few holidays that my family celebrates regularly; we take our young kids to our local record emporium (Offbeat Music in Durham NC, if you're interested), and we all buy cds and albums. We try to make the children aware of the joy and excitement of new and classic music, and the fun of shopping for records. So far, it's proving successful: the seven-year-old is a huge fan of the Beach Boys, Love and Big Star, and the three-year-old is into the music of Badfinger and the Beatles. Tempting as it is to lay the blame squarely on me, I find it's a sincere interest on their parts that just gets bolstered by their purchases on RSD over the years; so we're grateful for this celebration as it brings our family together again in our common interest of music."

Holsapple's kids can even buy a new record from their dad's band (which also features Chris Stamey), since the dB's are celebrating Record Store Day 2011 by releasing a 7" single, their first new music in over two decades.

A full list of exclusive Record Store Day releases is available here. These releases and all four RPMvinyl figures can be purchased at participating record stores on April 16th. Visit your local record store on April 16th and celebrate Record Store Day and in-store performances with the whole family!
